Nominee
In bringing to life an American icon such as Lincoln you run the risk of either creating a perfected character who lacks dimension, or tearing away to much and complicating our perceptions. This films walks the line and creates a Lincoln true to the progressive morality that we love him for but perhaps more ruthless than originally conceived. As Lincoln presses for the passing of the 13th Amendment (The abolition of slavery), he negotiates both the system and his obligation for the betterment of America, and for it we love him all the more.
This cast is astounding in their portrayals. Daniel Day Lewis is unparalleled in his presentation of the complexity of Lincoln. He plays a man both broken and resolute, truly a character before his time. I did find his physicality at time a bit to aware of its imitation, reminding me I was watching an actor portraying a character instead of the man himself. However his overall understanding of the character flirts with perfection, and is certainly Oscar worthy. In addition, the ensemble cast builds the tensions in Lincoln's life. Sally Field as Mary Todd shows a woman tied by the binds of her times and as a result is forceful in her protection of her family. While Tommy Lee Jones basically steals the show with his intelligent and hard hitting Thaddeus Stevens, giving life to an unsung hero of history. (Also one of the founders of Gettysburg College....so I may be biased...)
The screenplay by Tony Kushner is incredible. It is inspiring without being oppressive in rhetoric or too overstated. His words make the characters real. Also, John Williams' score offers emotional depth to the entirety of the film... as to be expected.
In recognition of how I am being very long winded...I have but one more category to highlight. Lighting!! Echoing the emotional discourse throughout the film, Lincoln walks through light and shadow allowing meaning to be accessed in yet another layer of the visual. It is very beautifully done.
Overall: This film is nothing short of a triumph. Its historical relevance goes beyond movie making and provides a remarkable viewing experience. It was a classic the moment it hit the screen; a must see. Happy Watching!
